Summary: A lot of problems
Comment: Purchase around Mother's Day.

I decided to purchase the Nikon since I have a D50.

To summarize the problems:

Couple weeks after purchase the shutter would not close and the camera would not shut down without taking the battery out. The camera was in repair ( Best Buy) for a month.

Right after I got it back it would not read ANY memory card without taking the card in and out several times or at all. Plus the camera would not shut down again without taking the battery out.

Went back to Best Buy . Had the camera services for the memory card reader error and the shut down. The camera was in service for a month again. Just received the camera back yesterday and again the camera has a problem reading the memory card. So far it is shutting down.

Best Buy's policy is to bring the camera in 4 times before it is considered a lemon. No matter if it is the same problem. I am taking it back to Best Buy today.

Stay away from this camera. The pictures are not nice. My brother purchased a Cannon and it takes a lot better pictures and he has no problem with it.

Hope it helps.

Summary: great little camera
Comment: I wanted a pocket sized camera that could still have a good zoom and take good pics. This is it! It fits in my pocket and I can still take great snapshots. I have a Canon digital rebel that I use for artsy shots but this is great little camera for everything else.

Summary: Excellent & Simple
Comment: Been a Nikon owner before and was very satisfied.
The S550 delivers its promise, it's simple, effective and picture quality is great. No major flaws except may be for the battery cover which looks cheap and fragile.
Bought it for me wife and she seems to love using it.

Summary: Decent for a point-and-shoot
Comment: I needed a new camera to replace my failing 5 year old DSLR camera. I choose the nikon brand over others because of some choices that top end photographers have been making lately. I have to admit, that I wish I would have made a better decision. The photos from this camera seem to have unusually high noise. I probably would have rated higher, but I am extremely disappointed that this camera does not use a standard USB connection. Also, why can you not charge the battery via USB? These days, "Features" like this should be an automatic thing.

Summary: Coolpix S550, Cool Camera!
Comment: Just got the Nikon Coolpix S550 (cool blue color) to replace my daughter's broken (lens won't retract) 7mp Pentax Optio. It's a very good price point for a 10mp camera. Startup time is much shorter than most subcompact point and shoot cameras. It also appears to have a faster write time to the SD card (although that would also depend upon your SD card). The Nikkor lens also seems to be a big improvement, as does the 5x zoom. It takes an extra step to get to the 15 presets, but unless you are a seasoned photographer, you'll want to use the presets. They cover most situations, including "museum" and "fireworks" settings. The "smile" and "blink" features are cool, but I wish Nikon would get away from using the software to reduce shake. It would be better if they used an electro-mechanical solution like Canon or Pentax.

The image quality is quite good, with excellent color saturation and accuracy of colors. The Macro setting gets you to within 10cm, which is not great, but still about the same as other point and shoot cameras. Video quality is good, but, as with all of these types of cameras, the mic picks up too much ambient noise to really be effective. Of course, if your seriously into video, you wouldn't be using a point and shoot camera to capture video. Overall, a very good pocket camera. My daughter LOVES it!!
