Summary: Coolpix S550, Cool Camera!
Comment: Just got the Nikon Coolpix S550 (cool blue color) to replace my daughter's broken (lens won't retract) 7mp Pentax Optio. It's a very good price point for a 10mp camera. Startup time is much shorter than most subcompact point and shoot cameras. It also appears to have a faster write time to the SD card (although that would also depend upon your SD card). The Nikkor lens also seems to be a big improvement, as does the 5x zoom. It takes an extra step to get to the 15 presets, but unless you are a seasoned photographer, you'll want to use the presets. They cover most situations, including "museum" and "fireworks" settings. The "smile" and "blink" features are cool, but I wish Nikon would get away from using the software to reduce shake. It would be better if they used an electro-mechanical solution like Canon or Pentax.
The image quality is quite good, with excellent color saturation and accuracy of colors. The Macro setting gets you to within 10cm, which is not great, but still about the same as other point and shoot cameras. Video quality is good, but, as with all of these types of cameras, the mic picks up too much ambient noise to really be effective. Of course, if your seriously into video, you wouldn't be using a point and shoot camera to capture video. Overall, a very good pocket camera. My daughter LOVES it!!

Comment: I had a Canon for 5 years and was very happy with it so I was hesitant to try a new brand; however, being an optometrist I know Nikon are great optical lenses so I decided to go with this camera. Its very user friendly and the pictures turn out great! I havent downloaded the softwear yet so I dont know how that is going to be but the camera itself is great!

Comment: This is the first camera of this type that I have owned. All of my other camers are high end type. We love it, it takes excellent pictures and is easy to operate. It has some of the features of the more expensive camers, and is point and shoot which makes it easy for the wife to use. I would recommend this camera to anyone who likes auto and no fuss in cameras.

This camera has more technology in sugh a small device that it is hard to comprehend. It takes excellent pictures in the worst of conditions, and it is easy to operate. I would recomend this camera to anyone who wants a professional point and shoot camera.

Comment: Was looking for an efficient camera with a broad range of capabilities. This camera did the job.
The strap for carrying the camera should be used all the time because it can easily slip out of hand without it.
My first CoolPix had a strap that was long enough to carry around the neck.
That was a much more secure method of safety from dropping the camera. I tucked it into a pocket, or belt and never had to worry if it slipped out of place. (I purchased a case but it is a pain to be taking it in and out). Other than that, - it is great! I plan to purchase an extra battery as an emergency backup.
