Summary: Very good software
Comment: This product is very good at capturing video, however I only sporadically was able to make the quick review work. I didn't like it for creating a dvd from my captured video. So I had to purchase another software for that. This does work great with DVD Shrink.

Summary: It installed very well and is working great
Comment: I wanted you all to know that I just installed Nero 9 on Windows Vista Home Premium and it went very smoothly.

I read about all of the problems and maybe went a little overboard with all of my precautions. However, this is what I did:

1. I used the downloadable cleanup tool to remove all traces of Nero 8.
2. I disabled my virus protection and firewall.
3. I disabled the User Account Controls
4. I downloaded and installed the 9.0.9.4d Update file - not the trial version, which was 9.0.9.4c. The 9.0.9.4c version is reported to cause some problems on Windows Vista - so you need the 9.0.9.4d version or later.

The installation did take about 30 minutes, but it when very smoothly. No error messages. So far everything is working. It did ask for my serial number during the install, which I supplied from the boxed version that I bought. It also seemed to activate OK.

I like Nero, because it handles the HD .mp4 files from my Sanyo Xacti 1010 video camera really well.

Summary: Fails to install, as for everyone else
Comment: I agree with all other reviewers:

1. Nero 9 fails to even install. Vista SP1 32-bit with full admin rights. Enough RAM/HDD/Processor speed.

2. Clean-up tool is indeed a mess. Sysinternals process monitor indicated that it was scanning the whole hard-drive (what the f**k). Yet did not remove stuff from Nero 9 folder! Running it second time worked and removed Nero 9 folder.

3. Messed up restore points by adding some 50 new ones.

4. Installer takes forever. And it gives some "shell" error (do not remember exact text) repeatedly, some 20 times. So I had to sit and keep clicking OK. Cannot even go relax while it is "supposedly" installing.

5. It claimed some applications installed successfully and the installer provided option to keep these while rolling back others. OK. But hey, the applications installed did not work.

6. Nero control center failed to recognize the trial serial number I got (copy-pasted from their email). It does not even say "not recognized". Just does not do anything.

Thank goodness I did not open the retail box I had purchased and decided to try installing it after seeing the reviews here. (And of course, I installed on a live system backup, not on the real system.)

Nero 9 is going back even when I got it under free-after-rebate from Thanksgiving sale. Nero 9 is not worth the time sending the rebates, and the sales tax and postage that rebate does not refund.

My main reason to upgrade from Nero 8 was to get any improvements they might have made to AVCHD support. Nero 8 works fine but has some stupid things (cannot open AVCHD video, make edits, and just save the changes; it has to recreate the whole thing**). Nero website claims they have made significant updates but what the heck if it does not even install!!

** By the way, you cannot do this even in Pinnacle Studio. Nero 8 was better than Pinnacle though since it at least copied over the AVCHD clips that did not change unlike Pinnacle that recreates EVERYTHING.

Why do I even use NERO 8 for AVCHD when I have Pinnacle? Well, once I edit with Pinnacle, I cannot view the video again in my HD camcorder. The file-naming convention does not match (camcorder uses old one). Nero 8 used old convention too, so camcorder recognized edited videos.

Summary: Stay Away!!!

This is your final warning!!! Do not, I repeat DO NOT attempt to use this product!!! It will not install correctly on either XP or Vista machines and getting a refund from Nero is impossible. I finally gave up on installing this after 4 days on my notebook and Desktop. This piece of do-do software will not complete the install and you will be require to go online and use a lame piece of software called clean tool which also DOES NOT function correctly. This used to be a good product a couple of years ago, and now with the cost-cutting, which is happening everywhere, they are probably using amature programmers to create this c**p.

Summary: It's better now!
Comment: I just bought and installed Nero9 without any problems (Other than slowest install know to mankind). I think Ahead must have reacted to some of the bad reviews and pushed some quick changes in.
I was a little worried after reading all the bad reviews because I had already (just) bought it. I had just gotten burned with Pinnacles Studio 10 and still healing up (This set the standard for Crap).
So far I have made and burned a home movie and music CD for my son. I did have to google a couple of things to figure out how to tweak the video and sound levels.
I also had to shut off the application feedback to nero as it causes a delay on starting of the applications.

Installed on a Dell quad core with 32bit Vista.
